Move over, Fat Bear Week. In summer 2026, a group of chunky Colorado rodents became unlikely internet celebrities through the first-ever Fat Marmot Week. The playful conservation contest invited the public to vote for yellow-bellied marmots as they prepared their bodies for months of winter hibernation. The event ultimately attracted more than 23,000 votes, turning an unusual wildlife competition into a social-media sensation.
From Scientific Research to Viral Competition
Fat Marmot Week was organized by researchers associated with the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado. The competition drew inspiration from Alaska’s popular Fat Bear Week, but its purpose went beyond entertainment.
The laboratory’s Marmot Project has followed individual yellow-bellied marmots for decades. The research, which began in 1962, provides scientists with an unusually detailed record of animal behavior, survival, reproduction and environmental change. The viral contest offered a new way to introduce that science to an audience that might never normally encounter a long-term ecological study.
Why Being Fat Is Serious Business for Marmots
For humans, gaining weight is rarely celebrated. For marmots, however, building substantial fat reserves is a matter of survival.
Yellow-bellied marmots spend the summer feeding on vegetation and accumulating energy before entering prolonged hibernation. During winter, their metabolism and body temperature fall dramatically, allowing them to survive for months underground while relying on stored energy.
The Colorado Parks and Wildlife explains that marmots can lose a substantial portion of their body weight during hibernation. Entering winter with insufficient reserves can therefore have serious consequences.
Dawn Becomes the Viral Champion
The inaugural contest featured eight individual marmots, including Dawn, G, Stonehenge, Dan’s Hat, Citroen, Open Kite, Dandelion and 1. Their unusual names come from markings researchers use to identify animals in the field.
Dawn ultimately captured both the public’s affection and the researchers’ weight-based title. He reached approximately 13 pounds after gaining around 4.5 pounds during the season. Researchers described that final weight as exceptionally large for a yellow-bellied marmot.
According to NPR, Dawn won the popular vote as well as the scientific competition for greatest mass gain. The combination made him the first champion of Fat Marmot Week.
Why the Internet Loved It
The contest succeeded because it combined three powerful ingredients: adorable animals, friendly competition and an easy-to-understand scientific story. Voters could pick their favorite marmot while simultaneously learning why seasonal weight gain matters.
There was also a deeper conservation message. Researchers have documented environmental changes affecting marmot populations, including altered snow conditions and other consequences associated with a changing climate. The U.S. Geological Survey provides broader research on how changing environmental conditions can affect mountain ecosystems and wildlife.
More Than a Meme
Fat Marmot Week demonstrates how science communication can turn specialized ecological research into something accessible and shareable. What began as a quirky contest became an opportunity to highlight a research project that has tracked wild mammals for more than six decades.
That may ultimately be the contest’s biggest achievement. People came for the chunky marmots, picked favorites and shared photographs—but along the way, thousands of people were introduced to hibernation biology, alpine ecosystems and the importance of long-term wildlife research.
With Dawn crowned the inaugural champion, Fat Marmot Week has already established a new place in the internet’s growing collection of beloved animal competitions. If researchers bring it back in 2027, the marmots may have an even bigger audience waiting.
