The New England Patriots entered 2026 with enormous expectations surrounding quarterback Drake Maye. After a breakthrough 2025 campaign, the third-year quarterback was expected to build on his momentum. Instead, his opening three games have created serious questions about the offense.

Turnovers Have Become the Biggest Problem
The warning signs appeared immediately. Against Seattle in Week 1, Maye threw three interceptions during New England’s final three possessions as the Patriots lost 13-10.
Maye acknowledged afterward that impatience contributed to the mistakes. NFL.com reported that Maye said his decisions ultimately cost the team the game.
His second game was more controlled. New England defeated Pittsburgh 20-3, although Maye still threw one interception without producing a touchdown. Then came Jacksonville.
Jacksonville Made the Concerns Louder
Against the Jaguars on September 27, Maye completed only 14 of 25 passes for 199 yards. He threw two interceptions and no touchdowns as New England fell 35-6.
The problem was not simply yardage. The Patriots generated 317 total yards, almost identical to Jacksonville’s 315. However, New England committed three turnovers and struggled to convert offensive opportunities into points.
That distinction matters. Drake Maye’s struggles are happening within an offense that has shown flashes of moving the ball. The bigger issue is finishing drives without costly mistakes.
Why the Situation Is More Complicated
Quarterback performance does not happen in isolation. New England has also dealt with personnel challenges, including the absence of offseason receiver addition A.J. Brown, who was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury.
Before Week 3, analysts also pointed to Maye’s difficult schedule. Yahoo Sports’ Week 3 analysis noted the concern surrounding Maye and the Patriots after their 1-2 opening.
At the same time, those circumstances cannot explain every turnover. Maye’s six interceptions are currently the central statistical concern, and his 58.6 passer rating ranks far below his 113.5 mark from 2025.
What Patriots Fans Should Watch Next
The next phase of the season will provide more useful evidence than the first three games alone. Coaches will need to determine whether Maye can reduce risky throws, improve decision-making and consistently create points when defensive pressure increases.
The Patriots also need better balance around their quarterback. A functioning running game, healthier receivers and improved protection could reduce the amount of pressure placed on Maye.
The current numbers justify scrutiny, but three games are still a small sample. The 2026 season has revealed genuine problems, yet it has not by itself established whether Maye’s struggles represent a temporary downturn or a larger regression.
For Patriots fans, the most important statistic may be what happens next: fewer turnovers, more scoring opportunities and a return of the efficiency that defined Maye’s previous season.
