Case Keenum Bears fans barely expected to see his name in the Week 3 quarterback conversation. Now, the 38-year-old veteran could suddenly find himself starting Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chicago quarterback room changed dramatically after Week 2. Caleb Williams suffered a right hamstring injury during the Bears’ 9-3 loss to Minnesota. Head coach Ben Johnson said Williams is week-to-week and is not expected to practice this week.
Then came another problem. Backup Tyson Bagent entered the NFL’s concussion protocol. That development moved Keenum from emergency insurance to a potentially important part of Chicago’s Week 3 plan.
How Keenum Suddenly Became Relevant
Keenum entered the 2026 season as Chicago’s third quarterback. The official Bears roster lists him at 38 years old with 14 seasons of NFL experience.
His role has mostly involved experience, preparation and mentorship. That changed when both quarterbacks ahead of him became uncertain for Week 3.
NFL Network reported that Keenum could start if Bagent does not clear concussion protocol before Monday night. The extra day created by the Monday schedule gives Bagent additional time to progress through the process.
A Veteran With a Long NFL Resume
Keenum is not an inexperienced emergency option. He has started 66 NFL games during his career and has thrown for more than 15,000 yards.
He also has one of the most memorable playoff moments of the modern NFL era. In 2017, Keenum threw the Minneapolis Miracle touchdown pass that lifted Minnesota over New Orleans in the NFC divisional round.
According to NFL statistics, Keenum’s career includes 79 touchdown passes and 51 interceptions, along with a 62.3% completion rate.
But This Would Be a Major Challenge
Experience does not eliminate the difficulty of the assignment.
Keenum has not started a regular-season game since 2023 with Houston. NFL Network reported that he had not thrown a regular-season pass recently, making a potential Monday night appearance a significant adjustment.
The Eagles also present a demanding opponent. Philadelphia entered Week 3 with a 2-0 record, while Chicago entered the matchup after losing 9-3 to Minnesota.
That means Chicago could ask Keenum to do something very different from carrying the offense. The likely emphasis would be protecting the football, managing the game and allowing the Bears’ supporting cast to create opportunities.
The Bears Have Been Preparing for This Possibility
Chicago did not keep Keenum simply because of his name. The team re-signed him during the 2026 offseason after he served as its third quarterback in 2025.
His value has included knowledge of the offense and the ability to help younger quarterbacks prepare. Now that experience could become much more important on the field.
The Chicago Bears’ official injury update also noted that Johnson has confidence in both Bagent and Keenum if circumstances require either veteran or backup to play.
Monday Night Could Become a Career Flashpoint
Keenum’s potential Week 3 opportunity is not necessarily a comeback story or a permanent change at quarterback. It is a reminder of how quickly the NFL depth chart can change.
Just days ago, Keenum was the emergency option behind Williams and Bagent. Now, he could walk into a nationally televised game against Philadelphia as Chicago’s starting quarterback.
If Bagent clears protocol, Keenum’s spotlight could disappear again. If he does not, the veteran will have an unexpected chance to show that years of NFL experience still matter when a team suddenly needs stability.
For the Bears, the immediate objective is simple: survive the quarterback crisis and keep their season moving. For Keenum, Monday night could be one of the most unexpected opportunities of his long career.
