Milly Alcock: Blockbuster Franchises & Comic-Book Stardom

Australian actor Milly Alcock is stepping into a new phase of her career. After attracting international attention as young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, she has taken on one of DC’s most recognizable superhero roles: Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl. The move places Alcock at the center of a major comic-book franchise and introduces her to a much wider film audience.

From Australian Television to Westeros

Before global audiences discovered her, Alcock built her career through Australian television. Her performance as Meg in the road-trip comedy-drama Upright helped establish her as a promising young performer. The role gave her an opportunity to demonstrate both dramatic ability and comic timing.

Her international breakthrough came in House of the Dragon. Alcock portrayed the younger version of Rhaenyra, a royal heir navigating family conflict, political ambition, and the struggle for power in Westeros. Although the character later passed to another actor after a major time jump, Alcock’s performance became an important part of the show’s first season.

She subsequently showed a different side of her range in Sirens, Netflix’s 2025 limited series. Playing Simone DeWitt, she moved away from medieval fantasy and into a contemporary story about privilege, family tensions, and social ambition.

Becoming DC’s Supergirl

Alcock’s next major step was joining the DC Universe. She first appeared briefly as Kara Zor-El in Superman before leading her own feature, Supergirl, released internationally in June 2026.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film draws inspiration from the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Its version of Kara is not simply a female copy of Superman. Instead, the story explores a more complicated hero shaped by loss, anger, and the experience of growing up amid the destruction of Krypton.

Alcock has discussed the character’s vulnerability and contradictions as central to her performance. In an interview with Variety, she described the demanding preparation behind the role, including stunt training and the pressure of leading a major superhero production.

What Comes After Supergirl?

Alcock’s place in DC’s future is also developing. She is expected to return as Kara Zor-El in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, extending her involvement in the interconnected franchise. That creates opportunities for the character to appear in stories beyond her solo film.

However, franchise visibility is only one measure of an actor’s career. Alcock’s work in Upright, House of the Dragon, and Sirens demonstrates her interest in varied characters and genres. Her next challenge will be balancing the scale of blockbuster storytelling with the distinctive performances that first brought her attention.

From Australian television to Westeros and the DC Universe, Milly Alcock’s career has crossed several entertainment worlds in a short period. Her Supergirl era marks a significant new chapter—and a chance to define the character for a new generation of moviegoers.
