Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Reboot: Casting Rumors and the New Fantasy Vision

Greta Gerwig’s Narnia reboot is bringing C. S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy universe back to the big screen with a major cast and a fresh creative direction. Titled Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the Netflix production explores the magical origins of Narnia rather than retelling the familiar wardrobe adventure first seen in earlier adaptations.

The first trailer has arrived, giving fans their first substantial look at Gerwig’s imaginative interpretation.

Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey and Meryl Streep Lead the Cast

Several casting rumors have now been resolved through official announcements. Daniel Craig plays Andrew Ketterley, the eccentric magician whose experiments introduce children to other worlds. Emma Mackey portrays Jadis, the character who becomes the White Witch, while Meryl Streep voices Aslan, the majestic lion associated with Narnia’s creation.

According to Netflix Tudum, the confirmed ensemble also includes Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma. Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell play the young leads, Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer.

The official cast announcement leaves little room for speculation about these central roles. However, rumors about additional appearances, future installments and possible franchise connections should remain unconfirmed until Netflix announces them.

Greta Gerwig’s Distinctive Creative Vision

Gerwig, whose directing credits include Lady Bird, Little Women and Barbie, is writing and directing the adaptation. Her approach places the story’s cosmic origins, childhood wonder and spiritual themes at the center of the adventure.

The Guardian reported on the first trailer, which features a striking combination of fantasy imagery and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” The unusual musical choice signals a different tone from earlier Narnia films.

Gerwig has also discussed her longstanding connection to Lewis’s books. In an interview covered by TheWrap, she explained her reasoning for choosing Streep to voice Aslan, emphasizing the character’s depth and emotional presence.

When Will the Narnia Reboot Be Released?

Netflix has confirmed a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, followed by streaming on April 2, 2027. The film will also receive IMAX previews beginning February 10.

The Netflix Media Center identifies the project as an adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, the novel that explores the creation of Narnia. Meanwhile, Variety previously reported that Mark Ronson would collaborate on the film’s music.

With an established director, a high-profile cast and a newly unveiled trailer, Gerwig’s Narnia reboot is becoming one of Netflix’s major fantasy releases for 2027. The biggest remaining questions concern how audiences will respond to its distinctive style and whether the adaptation will launch a lasting new film series.
