Andrew Garfield on Starring in the Tech Thriller Artificial

Andrew Garfield is stepping into the world of artificial intelligence with Artificial, a provocative new film about OpenAI, ChatGPT, and the people shaping technology’s future. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the drama casts Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, exploring the extraordinary rise of AI and the leadership crisis that shook the company in 2023.

The film has already attracted attention for its timely subject matter and unconventional approach to Silicon Valley.

Andrew Garfield’s Transformation Into Sam Altman

Garfield, known for The Social Network and The Amazing Spider-Man, takes on another technology-centered role in Artificial. This time, he portrays a real executive whose decisions have influenced the global conversation about artificial intelligence.

Speaking to Reuters, Garfield explained that curiosity and concern about the people building powerful technologies motivated his performance. He also acknowledged that he had never met Altman, emphasizing that the film offers a dramatized interpretation rather than a firsthand portrait.

The screenplay comes from Simon Rich, while Guadagnino directs. Their collaboration examines ambition, corporate power, and the difficult questions surrounding increasingly capable AI systems.

Inside the OpenAI Leadership Crisis

Artificial focuses on the events surrounding Altman’s sudden removal as OpenAI CEO in November 2023 and his return days later. The film explores the disagreements, competing priorities, and personalities behind that extraordinary episode.

According to the New York Film Festival, the story spans decades of machine-learning research and examines the ethical challenges accompanying AI’s rapid development.

The cast includes Yura Borisov as AI researcher Ilya Sutskever, Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati, and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. Mark Rylance also appears as AI scientist Geoffrey Hinton.

The Guardian reported that the first trailer presents an unsettling vision of the technology industry, mixing corporate intrigue with darkly comic and ominous imagery.

Why Artificial Is Generating Buzz

The film’s distribution history has added another layer of interest. Amazon MGM Studios initially backed the project but later dropped it. Independent distributor Neon subsequently acquired the film and announced plans for a theatrical release.

The Associated Press reported on the distributor change and the film’s focus on Altman’s firing and reinstatement. The decision attracted attention because Amazon had separately announced a major investment in OpenAI.

According to Screen Daily, Artificial is scheduled to open in select US theaters on December 25, 2026, before a wider rollout.

With Garfield leading a strong ensemble, Artificial could appeal to viewers interested in technology, corporate power, and the human consequences of innovation. Its central question reaches beyond Hollywood: who should control the technologies reshaping society, and how accountable should their creators be?
